PORTER — Police responded Tuesday afternoon to a
crash on Interstate 94 eastbound near Indiana 49 when a semitrailer
rolled over and spilled its contents on the roadway.
Indiana
State Police say Thomas E. Poling, 47, of Fairborn, Ohio, was on the
ramp and going too fast when he braked for a slower moving vehicle.
About 45,000 pounds of metal shavings in 10 containers were not secured
inside the trailer, investigators said, and the shifting load caused the
semi and its trailer to roll over onto the passenger side.
The truck was owned by Piqua Transfer and Storage out of Piqua, Ohio. The load was going from Spencer, Iowa, to Bedford Ohio.
Poling was taken to Franciscan St. Anthony’s
Hospital in Chesterton with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Police say alcohol may have been a factor in the crash and toxicology
results are pending.
Poling was cited for driving too fast to avoid a
collision, securement violation, equipment violations, no seat belt and
open container violation, and other charges may be pending.
